Why this design is popular
It is the simplest way to brew a large batch: fill the filter with coarse coffee, add water, steep in the fridge, lift the filter out and pour. Because the coffee stays in the same container you serve from, there is no transfer step. The airtight lid also matters, because cold brew picks up fridge odours and loses aroma when left open.
The trade-off
Tritan is plastic rather than glass, which some people prefer to avoid for long steeps, though it survives drops that would break a jar. Fine mesh filters trap oily grounds and need a thorough rinse, ideally backwards under the tap, to stop build-up.
